The Peace Institute provides its most direct service to Flemish Parliament and its political environment in the form of advice. The close connection between the Institute's scientific work and its political role is established in its advisory function. The Peace Institute's recommendations are issued by the Board of Directors and are published in advisory notes.
21/06/2010 Advice concerning the cross-curricular attainment targets: remembrance and peace education
On 22 April 2009, the Flemish Parliament adopted a Parliamentary Act introducing new attainment targets and development goals in primary and secondary education. Two of the new cross-curricular attainment targets in secondary education focus on avoiding intolerance and racism, and on insight into the role of conflicts. The Peace Institute draws attention to a number of important elements related to operationalizing the cross-curricular attainment targets in question.

Based on recent research on the quantity, quality and impact of foreign news coverage, in this Advice the Flemish Peace Institute discusses the scope for action to support better coverage of news about the international community. With a view to the verifiable social added value of high-quality foreign news, the Institute has formulated a number of specific recommendations for the structural promotion of foreign news coverage in the Flemish media.

On 7 June 2009, citizens of the Flemish Region of Belgium elected members of the Flemish Parliament as well as Members of the European Parliament. In a Memorandum and on the basis of its advisory and research activities, the Peace Institute reviews issues that require attention in the next legislative term. Three areas are emphasized: peace education, control on arms trade and a democratic foreign policy.
